Here’s an open letter to Kirsty, author of the influential affiliate $tuff blog. I’ve been busy of late on a site that is going to get more popular as winter approaches but the site isn’t currently set up with advertising. So I’m asking helpful Kirsty for a bit of advice on how to make a bit more pocket money.

Dear Kirsty,

I’ve just relaunched a site that was badly neglected. It regularly had thousands of visitors daily peaking at 125,000 and I didn’t think anything of it but only recently that figure dropped to a lowly 200.

I’ve removed all of the original content of the site and I have spent the first few weeks of August re-building up the pages based around my previous most popular keywords and images.

After it’s redesign launch four weeks ago, I’m now attracting 1,000-4,000 unique visitors daily looking at between 5,000-22,000 pages and this figure is climbing daily.

I’m not quite sure of the traffic as Servage, Statcounter and Google Analytics are all giving me different results. This may be down to how I am presenting the content. The graph above displays the lowest figures of the three, so it’s looking promising.

Speaking of Google, they have been in touch to say that I can’t promote Google Adsense on the site. You see the content is a bit risque, as you’ll soon tell from my most popular pages:

/drunkcelebs/drunk-celebs-upskirt/
/drunkcelebs/drunk-celebs-see-through/
/drunkcelebs/drunk-celebs-flashing/
/drunkcelebs/drunk-celebs-nipple-slip/

I’m wondering how I can monetise the site. I don’t want to fill it with full adult porn adverts, so is there anything more subtle I could do?

I’m sure many merchants in the affiliate marketing space won’t want to be associated with a site that focuses on drunk celebrities and includes the odd not-safe-for-work image. The site has profited in the early days though from promoting the likes of Figleaves and JackpotJoy with traditional banners.

I’ve also spotted that a link from my Befuddle home page to an rss feed of my shopping site ShopCodes is ranking highly for some voucher code related keywords. So whilst that page was created as an experiment, I think the site has the potential to exploit the retail market.

Google certainly seems to like the influence of it’s status, being eight years old with a PR4 and it’s Wordpress formatting.

My pages are being indexed within hours of posting. The quickest I’ve spotted is two hours between page creation and the page to be indexed by Google on page 1 and for someone to search for a celebrity and land on my site.

The site is on page 1 of Google for the following terms if not the #1 spot itself.

# drunk celebs
# drunk celebrities
# celebs
# uk celebs

Who or what can I promote? You’ll see there’s an advert on there for an adult dating site but that is merely a place holder as I want to see what click-throughs it receives. (At the time of writing, it’s got a CTR of 1.02%)

I also know I’ve got a worldwide audience. Visitors from 147 different countries have visited just recently and this is broken down as such …

The UK appears low at 8% but Analytics says the UK accounts for 33% of my traffic and the visitors spend an average of 4.5 minutes viewing content. They seem to stick around

All the best. Cheers,
Ray

I’ve been sat on the new design of Befuddle for a few week’s now looking for a window to be able to launch it. At the weekend, in an effort to avoid anything tax related, I completely removed all of the old Befuddle content.

I installed the latest version of WordPress, uploaded my bespoke theme and then played with a few gallery plug-ins. With this new format I can easily create a gallery around a celebrity based on the pictures that I’ve had stored for the last eight years.

The site is now live. I’m aware of a few small things that need tweaking which I’ll crack on with during August, once my tax deadline is out of the way. There is one major bug that I’ll be monitoring. Just like this blog there are often WordPress ‘unable to connect to database’ errors. So I may need to move hosts if I feel that will resolve it.

Below, are the subtle different faces of Befuddle. You can see a lot more at Wayback Machine.

This grab from May 2000, just 3 months after the site was named a ‘Yahoo! Pick of the Week’ and I was featured in national newspapers. The content is primarily story driven ie my friends drunken tales. Further down the page there’s a ‘Scooby Doo’ drinking game, which I still get in my keywords list to this day.

Look at this. It’s 2004 and this site has a bit more colour and begins to love itself. The adapted logo tells you the site focuses on drunk celebs. Traffic peaked at 125,000 visitors daily. The stories are relegated to neglected pages. Look on the right to see ‘Trolleyed’, my shopping portal.

Jump to 2007. Ooh that logo is moving on now But what happened to that partner site ‘Trolleyed’? Well Shop Codes is the same site as Trolleyed. It just never made any money when it was called Trolleyed! The success of Shop Codes though lead to the downfall of Befuddle. Traffic was at a reasonable 1,000 a day before it crashed and burned in September 2007.

Hello to today! New logo, keeping with the spirit that you’re drunk and a little homage to Paris Hilton. Little content at the moment but I’m in no rush. I’ve got another eight years to enjoy working on my own original first website again.

The new design and format of Befuddle, my drunk celebrity picture site, is currently available for viewing in it’s ‘hidden’ location at www.befuddle.co.uk/blog.

Back in March, I took stock of the existing site and realised that it was pretty much pointless carrying on with the existing design and methods. It wasn’t flexible and there was no scope for any enhancements for the site that once had daily traffic of 125,000 unique visitors.

NextGEN Gallery

So I thought I’d give WordPress a go. I installed it and set about looking for some plug-ins to create and manage galleries online. Alex Rabe’s NextGEN Gallery does most of everything I need it to, including adding watermarks to images.

I created several posts based on the remaining picture content that I still had on my Befuddle and Drunk Celebs domains. Most of that content had to be deleted back in September when there was the malware warning.

I back-dated the posts, so I’ve now got some content in the new format dated December 2003.

Adult Design Evolution

Once I established that I could manage galleries and posts within WordPress I needed a new theme. I searched for adult WordPress themes and on 19th March found Adult Design Evolution.

I entered my project details in their site for a quotation and received:

Custom Cartoon Design: $75

Logo Design: $125

Custom Blog Design: $175

I received personal emails from Laurentiu of their sales and marketing team and he sent me questionnaires so that I could write down the specifics of my requirements.

I received a new Befuddle logo, which you’ve already commented that you like. I said I wanted something in the same colours as the original and that “it should be a ‘fun’ font or give the impression that the site doesn’t take itself seriously”.

I got a custom cartoon design. I wanted a cartoon to show that the site was very much tongue in cheek. I also didn’t want the site to be too adult. So I asked for a suggestive Paris Hilton lookalike that “can show teasing flesh but not be too provocative” and that “the character should appear drunk or carrying drink”. I’m very pleased with the result.

I also got the rest of the blog theme to sit with how I wanted the categories to be displayed and that there was room for advertising banners within the posts and spaces for sponsorship slots on the widths.

I paid half of the fee upfront via PayPal and the final payment once I’d received the final approved designs. It was only when I received the invoice did I realise that I was dealing with a Romanian company Studio DBS.
ADE have been busy so they scheduled my project in for 10th May. On 21st May I was sent an email with a design of how the blog would look. At this point I still had opportunities to raise any issues or concerns.

I wondered if I’d see more than one design but ADE usually work on just one design sample because they can achieve better results than splitting the time and making more versions.

Two days after approving the designs, the blog was viewable as a working sample on their servers. Again I had opportunity to review. At this stage I completed the full payment of $375. Which, with the exchange rate is an absolute bargain!

Beta

I’m not in a position to launch this new design over the existing site yet, as I’ve found a technical fault with my host. Sometimes viewers of this blog see database connection errors and Befuddle, which is hosted in the same place, will experience the same.

I’ll also have little or no Internet access over the next fortnight, as I’m away on business and pleasure, so I am in no rush to launch the new design.

However, take a look around at some Drunk Celebs. Much of the content will lead you back to the original existing site.

Cheers!

When Google gave it the kiss of death with a malware warning in September the end appeared nigh.

However, I refused to let my great brand die. I culled all the pages, slapped up some Britney and then left it to rot again.

The sleeping giant is only resting though and I’ve made the decision to transfer all the content into a WordPress blog format.

My first website Befuddle.co.uk is moving. I started work on creating Befuddle in 1999 when my ISP freenetname gave me some free web space to create a single home page.

Well that was some home page!

I don’t know when Blogs were created but when my site launched in February 2000, it was essentially a web log of my drunken tales.

I got a few mates to contribute and then people started to email in their own drunken stories.

Within weeks of the site launching I was in national and regional newspapers. It helped that the website was selected as a “Yahoo! Pick of the Week.”

Then when Britney Spears was filmed drunk at the age of 18, I thought the pictures of the drunken celebrity would sit well with my site, that was totally based on drunken humour.

Traffic escalated with the pictures and so it wasn’t long before I was searching for more pics of celebrities out on the town.

I also realised that I had a niche as there was little in the way of competition. There were adult sites that were charging subscriptions but I just thought I’d post them up for free. After all, they weren’t my pictures in the first place.

Befuddle became tagged as the “Home of Drunk Celebs.”

Then there was Paris Hilton. I was the number one listing for the search term “Paris Hilton” on the day her first home made movie was spreading across the Internet.

I had 125,000 daily visitors and I then got introduced to affiliate marketing and selling text links. I was charging a small fortune for a single text link to advertisers, who in turn were making money selling the Paris video. I made some cash and some Befuddle pages had a PR of 6 at the time. I had to make money though as in those days, bandwidth was costing me £100 a day just to keep my site alive.

It didn’t last too long. Google did an algorithm update and thousands of sites appeared.

Then Befuddle got neglected for several years, whilst I concentrated on some affiliate only shopping portals and blogs.

But still after a few years without updates, it was still attracting thousands of daily visitors to its hundreds of celebrity pages.

In 2007, Google presented a malware warning to the site and I could have closed it down then. That would have been the easiest solution.

However, the brand and traffic are still strong. The home page still has a PR of 5, so I didn’t want it to just die off.

The site is all built in HTML and development coding has moved on. So it is time to move it from its host to one with a PHP server and with large space and bandwidth allowance. Servage is perfect for that.

The original terms of service from freenetname were well and truly broken. I think you were only supposed to have a 35K page but nobody ever got in touch.

So today the site is down as it’s moving home. If it arrives on the other side of its DNS journey safely, then I’ll look at ripping it up and trying something new during 2008.

It has potential. I had some very good late night conversations at a4uexpo on how it could be developed.

Before you go, if you do a search for “drunk celebs” on Google …

… I have the top 9 links!

X Factor judge Dannii Minogue is inadvertently helping Befuddle become a rising star again. Google is still giving Befuddle the big X exactly one month after labelling it as a ‘malware site‘.

However hot Dannii is top of the searches and a search for ‘dannii minogue’ in Google is returning the new look Befuddle as the fifth result on page one. This is resulting in rising visitors (ahem), page views and advertising revenue.

Befuddle is now making more revenue than before. Gone are the adverts from Claxon Media and alongside the larger size images, are Google Adsense adverts at the top and bottom of the pages. It is here that the financial transformation looks interesting. Since AdSense was introduced to Befuddle after the 10th September it made $66 last month. Already it has made $55 in the first 10 days of October.

All the hundreds of old celebrity pages were ruthlessly removed from the site and a selection of new ones added for Britney Spears, Dannii Minogue, Denise van Outen, Emma Jones, Gemma Atkinson, Jessica Simpson, Jordan and Sarah Harding.

Dannii Minogue is on the nations television screens every week and it’s no surprise to see that there’s hot search activity for her.

Befuddle is currently receiving 900 unique visitors each day despite only promoting 8 celebrities at this time. The Dannii Minogue section of pages were viewed over 4,500 times yesterday. This resulted in $17 of Adsense revenue.

When the malware problem was raised, Google traffic dropped from 950 unique visitors to 80 overnight. It has now climbed to a steady 250 each day

Pageviews were at 12,000 a day then dropped to a low of 2,500. Now they’re at a healthy 6,500 page views a day.

So today Befuddle is making £8.50 a day and this is despite it only having 8 pages of celebrities. I’ve hundreds of pictures and pages ready to upload from my home pc, so I’ll be watching the traffic and new revenue stream with interest.

I’m planning to spend my time on my much more profitable discount code site but I know I could make more Befuddle visitors a little bit happier too.

50 friends, colleagues and Internet marketeers have joined the ‘Save Befuddle’ group on Facebook. The group was created as a morale boosting exercise as my site Befuddle hit its lowest ever patch. I needed quick solutions and support to save my site within a self-imposed 10-day deadline.

As reported on Facebook, this blog and Affiliates4u, Befuddle had been punished by Google for distributing Malware. A search in Google for say “Victoria Beckham drunk”, returned “Warning – visiting this web site may harm your computer!”

Traffic has nose dived. Google organic was sending me approximately 1,000 unique visitors a day and now it’s just a handful.

The site is still receiving a few hundred visitors each day, down from just short of 2,000 visitors.

Not knowing where the problem came from I removed all US based third party advertising and counters. This left the pages looking terribly ugly so I deleted all celebrity pages. This drastic course of action also meant I didn’t have to single handedly have to manually check each one. Some celebrities had 100 pages in their own sections.

I’ve posted up some new drunk celebs pages in a different directory and used the opportunity to display larger size images along with some YouTube clips to make the site more sticky.

I’ve also added Google AdSense to the pages so that not all revenue is lost. AdSense is generating about $6 a day with the current levels of traffic, which is a lot more than the flashing advertising ever did.

On Sunday I submitted my site for review at StopBadware.org where the site is currently in the process of being reviewed.

Thanks for the support here, on Affiliates4u and Facebook.

Befuddle will be saved and will come out stronger.

I’ve worryingly received an email from Google today saying my Befuddle drunk celebrity pages, “can cause users to be infected with malicious software.” As a result, “This site may harm your computer” message is printed on the search pages and the link goes to a warning page.

The email gives three example urls but it applies to many and to be honest I can’t see anything wrong. Google does say, “in many cases the webmaster is unaware because the site displays content from an ad network that has a malicious advertiser.”

My pages do contain advertising from a third party, Claxon media. I don’t know if they are to blame or not but they’ll be the first bit of code to be removed.

Now, firstly, I have to say that I have not updated Befuddle in a long long time. Seven times since 2005 in fact! Twice in March 2007, three times in January, once in December 2006 and then it was back in January 2006 before the last update.

Despite the low frequency of updates it still receives credible traffic as it receives up to 4,000 visitors each day. At its peak it had 125,000 visitors a day just as Paris Hilton became globally famous.

Now updating Befuddle is not going to be easy. It hasn’t moved with the times. It’s not written with a CMS or using server side scripting.

It’s flat HTML all crafted by hand. The site was launched in February 2000 and the code and design hasn’t progressed much since then.

Editing all my pages is going to be a painful manual chore. On top of that, I don’t even know what I need to remove. There’s no guarantee that if I remove all the advertising, that I have removed the problem.

I’ve just looked at my analytics stats and can quickly see that my Befuddle stats have halved overnight.

Now it’s a race against time. I’ve got exactly a week before my two week holiday abroad to save Befuddle.

It is an old site that I’ve grown out of. But I am fond of it and you always have to respect having thousands viewing something you’ve built.

If I don’t move quick, Google may drop the site for good. It could be a blessing in disguise but if the site is to close I want it to be my choice.

Firefly, Leeds 5th July 2007

There was a rare Northern affiliate get together in Leeds this week and it turned out to be a small friendly affair. Approximately 20 people met up at Firefly and enjoyed a drink or two and free buffet.

Events like these are a must to newcomers from across the industry and here’s my spin on Kieron’s article on ‘6 reasons not to attend‘ an affiliate event:
1. I’m only 18/17/65/85 etc. and only do this part time, I’m worried that I’ll be the youngest/oldest there.

Look at the picture. I’m clearly the youngest looking one. Oh well, front left any way That didn’t stop me attending an event.

2. I don’t want to let people know what sites I run and feel I will be under pressure to tell people about my business and the URL’s of my sites.

Ok, Elaine and I tried coaxing some information out of Stu – all in good spirits – but he stuck to his guns and shall remain a mystery for a while longer.
3. I’ve never been to an event and won’t know anyone.

This was my second event but they were all new faces. It was welcoming from the moment I went into the room and met up with Nadeem, who organised the event. There were some new people new to the industry there including merchants and agency staff.
4. I can’t afford it.

I live in Leeds and technically I have to go past this venue to get to my bus stop home. The first beer was free and there was an excellent buffet. Nadeem, I really only came for the free jolly
5. Are the Wurzels really playing live? Do I have to put up with “Combine Harvester” all night?

They weren’t in attendance but there was live jazz starting about 9pm. By then Elaine and the others were the last to leave.

6. I’m worried I might get in a similar state to Frostie in that picture taken in Vegas earlier this year.

I tried my hardest with several Staropramen
The event was wrapped up in less than four hours but I have gained from the experience from meeting new people across the industry.

Business wise, it looks like three new Exclusive discount codes will be on their way to my email inbox in the morning. I attended though to meet some of the familiar faces from the Affiliates 4u site and oh, get some more friends for Facebook

DrunkCelebs.co.uk reached a new audience last week after being featured within the “Showbiz & Fun” section of the Romanian website HotNews.ro

The full page article includes a picture of Paris Hilton drunk and lists a Top 10 of drunk celebrities. If I knew the site was going to get this exposure I’d have updated the list, which is based on Befuddle celebrity traffic. So here, in Romanian is the Top five …

Locul 1: Jodie Marsh
Modelul britanic Jodie Marsh este faimoasa pentru nenumaratele sale certuri in pubic cu supermodelul Jordan.

Locul 2: Paris Hilton
Paris Hilton si-a degradat imaginea din cauza inregistrarilor video compromizatoare facute publice prin intermediul internetului.

Locul 3: Cheryl Tweedy
Cheryl Tweedy, componenta trupei Girls Aloud nu este tocmai linistita in momentul in care isi petrece o seara prin club.

Locul 4: Charlotte Church
Cantareata pop Charlotte Church si-a sarbatorit implinirea varstei de 18 ani prin o petrecere care a tinut in jur de 14 ore si la care a consumat in bauturi in cantitati mari.

Locul 5: Avril Lavigne
Avril Lavigne se imbata cu prietenii, iar apoi devine prietenoasa cu alte persoane pe ringul de dans, dupa care este ajutata de prieteni sa mearga acasa.
