Look after the lbs and the pennies will look after themselves

Last year when my bank accounts were getting fatter, so was my waistline. And just like my old financial debt, I didn’t take action to stop the rot until enough was enough.

The milestone for me came in December when I went to buy some trousers from NEXT and found that I couldn’t fit into size 36 trousers.

I knew I was getting fatter but I drew the line at buying a pair of 38 inch waist trousers which, when tried on, were way too baggy. [Why don't retailers also do odd number sizes?]

So I eagerly awaited my new Slendertone belt that I won in November for being the most improved affiliate for the month.

Two weeks after giving myself electric shocks, I knew there was no escaping, I’d have to get back to the gym.

The target was simple. Squeeze back into those size 36s and look better for the June holiday season.

So post-Christmas I regularly attended gym spinning classes twice a week. That’s cycling to dance music for an hour that burns 800 calories and makes you look purple by the end of it.

I bought some new tops for my February LinkShare San Francisco trip and even then I was in trouble. It was at this point that whilst my waist was manageable my chest wouldn’t fit into XL shirts or tshirts. So for the first time ever I had to start buying XXL.

So back in England, I realised that I not only had to go to the gym but I had to change my diet. Flukily and successfully I found an exercise regime and meal plan that was losing me appproximately 1kg a week.

  1. Detox fruit smoothy or healthy vegetable juice for breakfast £3
  2. Salad box with soup for lunch £5.50
  3. Tesco Wholefood nuts to snack £2
  4. Tesco Healthy ready meal for dinner £3.50
  5. 2 x midweek spinning classes
  6. 2 x midweek sauna & steam room
  7. Friday liquid diet of getting smashed followed by a Saturday morning spin and sauna

Not cheap … hence pennies are required and they all may be contributing to my weight loss.

By the time my Sunshine.co.uk trip to Benidorm came about at the end of April I’d dropped from 91kg to 85kg. I was worried that I’d put the weight back on drinking vodka for a week but I actually lost a further kilo whilst on holiday. My stomach at that point has gotten used to eating smaller portions.

During that holiday I had a real problem keeping my trousers up lol. They were constantly falling down and the belts just weren’t up to the job.

So back to NEXT I went, three weeks later, where I got myself measured up.

The assistant happily told me I was a size 34 waist. So there I am, I’m 6 kilos lighter and dropped a waist size, when 6 months ago I was ballooning in the other direction.

There’s still more to come but the most fundamental difference to me is that I’ve actually gotten off my arse to get to the gym and now look forward to it.

Last year, I believed that I had to spend every hour possible at my computer for my website to be a success. I’d think that two hours at the gym would harm my business. Now I know that’s not the case. I’m no longer tired in an evening, when I once was.

It’s all about working smarter. Look after the lbs and the pennies will look after themselves.

YesAsia NoCouponSites

Today I generated my last sale for Yes Asia, my 35th top commission earning merchant of 2008.

The entertainments retailer, which I have an Exclusive code for, have been studying their analytics and have signalled their intent today to kick me off their programme.

Effective from 17th July YesAsia will no longer allow affiliates who run discount voucher/coupon sites to promote the program. Please note that if you are a content site which also lists vouchers or a cashback site then this will not affect you, only those sites which are focused mainly or exclusively on vouchers.

I may be free to promote Yes Asia on my Befuddle content site which has a global audience but not on ShopCodes, where it rightly sits.

Only last month I won a Yes Asia incentive competition and won half a dozen Japanese pop cds. I’ve not listened to them but gave them as a gift to my Japanese housemate.

Today I’ve since removed the links to Yes Asia and replaced them with CD Wow! but in retrospect I should continue to promote Yes Asia but without listing any codes [albeit they won't pay me].

My reasoning is simple. My site ‘Shop Codes’ includes shop codes but 30% of my top 20 performing merchants don’t issue codes or I have never published a code for. So by that logic, if I have never published a code for say Kiddicare am I Kiddicare content affiliate? There’s content on the page. I’ve argued the same logic in the past with Mothercare and AlphaRooms [for which I've never made a sale but that's beside the point].

It appears the issue in this case, is the over writing of content cookies by users searching for codes at the basket stage.

This is highly likely to be true and below are the Yes Asia search terms that have brought people to my site.

My Yes Asia page, which is linked to from the Shop Codes home page has been viewed 90 times in the last 30 days, with 73 uniques.

The average time for people to spend on the page is a staggering 2 minutes and 33 seconds. This is more than twice the time people look at my Dixons page.

Here are the top 50 entrance keywords that attract people to the site. Interestingly people have been specifically searching for my exclusive code or rival merchants.

Grand a Week for Doing Zilch

For the first time ever since I’ve owned both a mobile and a laptop, I’ve had a complete break away from affiliate marketing.

During the first half of June I’ve enjoyed my third holiday of the year in Zante and returned for a weeks training course and exam.

Whilst away from home for 2 weeks I was ‘always on’ and connected but rather than checking stats, reading my thousands of emails or editing files, I just updated facebook.

When I packed my laptop, this wasn’t the intention but whilst out in the sun I felt like I deserved a complete break.

Previously I’d have worried that my sites traffic and commissions would suffer. This month, I’ve been thinking ‘So what. I’ll catch up and get my site back up to speed later.’

So I’ve been bathing, flirting, drinking, dancing, learning, revising and everything else but update my site and things are looking promising.

In the last week that my site wasn’t updated AT ALL, it made over £1,000 in commission. During the whole of June I’ve edited only 8 files. That was on the eve of me travelling to Bristol to study for the ISEB Intermediate Certificate in Software Testing.

So, during June I’ve earned £200 per merchant update I’ve done. Not bad, earning approximately £800 per hour. If only it escalated that way.

Now that I’ve had more than my fair share of holidays in this first six months of 2008, it’s now time for me to do a lot more than 8 updates per day, never mind month.

It’s time for me to start adding the June codes before they expire in 2 weeks and earning more than that grand a week.
